Practice outline for the date of Wednesday, March 27, 2002.
Commanding and executive officers Cereo and Ls3 have decided over the
following concepts to be covered:
Teamwork
Variable capability
Attention
Teamwork
Those of you who have previously played Counter-Strike in a public
server may have been at times exposed (albeit doubted) to teamwork. With the
advent of Day of Defeat, more teamwork is present, to an extent. Teamwork
is not simply a horde of team members blindy advancing against the enemy,
rather, it should entail a reasoning behind the planned advance. Not only
should be team members be aware of a plan, they should also be prepared to
react to an event, especially an unexpected one. For example, when
a friendly machine gunner supporting an advance is taken out, how should
one react? First, everyone should be aware that the machine gun was
decommissioned (which is a part of paying attention); secondly, depending
on the situation (and the commanding officer's orders) the team advances
or holds positions. Teamwork never involves less than two teammembers,
every action a player takes should be for either their comrade or the team
in whole. A flag is never taken or a building captured for
self-benefit.
Variable capability
With variable meaning changeable, this basically means that anyone should
be able to do anything. A Third Ranger, through training, will be capable
of playing offensively, defensively, supportively with any weapon.
Attention
Tying in with teamplay, paying attention in any shooter game is key.
Listening to door creaks, footsteps, gun shots voices, looking at death
messages, and so on and so forth is essential. Additionally, the urge to
shoot the enemy at sight should be resisted. One may wonder why,
depending on the situation, killing one enemy out of the five advancing
with a k98k or Garand may not be good idea, your position will probably be
revealed, along with your teammates' presence, which may lead to being
steamrolled by the opposition and in turn result in lost flags.
There are many more finer details of DoD play which I can not completely
cover, but I will strive to explain as many that will come to mind in the
future. Please feel free to contact either Cereo or Ls3 for comments
or questions.
Keep in mind, DoD is a game, have fun, these ideas
should be integrated into your playing style gradually to have more
fun!
